At Flipturn we take charger compatibility seriously. Before any charger model goes into production with our platform, it goes through a rigorous testing process with our hardware team.
Our engineers push chargers to their limits, simulate edge cases, and intentionally try to break things. Discovering issues in our lab is infinitely better than discovering them in a customer's depot.
What our testing process has uncovered
Power management failure. During testing with one charger model, we discovered that clearing a TxProfile also clears the TxDefaultProfile, meaning chargers could unexpectedly start using full power. For a fleet depot running under a site-wide power limit through Flipturn's energy management, this could blow past capacity thresholds and trigger costly demand charges.
Stale configuration. A different charger model sometimes reports stale configuration values; a soft reset is necessary to get accurate reporting. Without that knowledge, operators would see misleading data about their chargers' settings and power limits.
Authorization edge case. Testing with a certain DCFC model revealed that vehicle IDs aren't reported in FreeVend mode, which would have broken fleet tracking and made it impossible to attribute charging sessions to specific vehicles.
Each of these would have caused real operational disruption for customers if it had reached production without us knowing.
Collaboration over finger-pointing
When we find an issue, we also work with the OEM to fix it. We compile detailed reports with OCPP logs, configuration details, and recommended actions, and we work with charger manufacturers like ABB and Tritium so that when new firmware ships, we've already validated it against our platform.
As one pilot user told us: "I've generally been able to break power management with your competitors, but yeah, I wasn't able to break it at all. It was really, really good." That kind of feedback comes out of months of testing work.
