Cryptic charger error codes (and how Flipturn makes them readable)
Ever dive into charger vendor error codes? A lot of the time, they're cryptic strings of numbers and abbreviations that require a manual and a crystal ball to decipher.
But every once in a while, you stumble across one that's so absurdly dramatic, you can't help but laugh. Today's gem: "DYING GASP" — a little overdramatic, don't you think?
The error code problem
EV charger error codes are notoriously opaque. Different manufacturers use different coding systems, different terminology, and different levels of documentation. When a charger goes down at 2 AM and your overnight vehicles need to be charged by morning, the last thing you want is to spend 30 minutes cross-referencing a PDF manual to figure out what "Error 0x4A3F" means.
The problem compounds at scale. A large transit depot might have chargers from multiple manufacturers, each with its own error taxonomy. Without a unified translation layer, diagnosing issues becomes a full-time job.
How Flipturn solves this
Flipturn makes charger error codes easier to decipher by baking the OEM error manual directly into our product. When you view an error code in Flipturn, you get both what it means and what to do next — no digging through PDFs necessary.
This capability is also built into Flip AI. When Flip generates a daily health report, it doesn't just flag that "Charger 35 had 2 faults." It tells you: "Charger 35 is still faulted due to emergency stop button activation. Recommended action: inspect emergency stop button for physical damage or malfunction."
As Christian Bigger at Spokane Transit put it: "This translates charger messages into English and puts it in one update I can review in 5 minutes."
Why it matters
Every minute a charger is down is a minute a vehicle isn't charging. Faster error diagnosis leads to meaningfully higher charger uptime. When operators can immediately understand what's wrong and take action, issues that used to take hours to resolve get fixed in minutes.
